Everything You Need To Organize, Shop And Cook Smart!Cooking TipsTips to make it healthierInstead of three pounds of ground beef in a recipe I'll use two pounds of beef plus 2 or 3 medium onions, 1/4 cup of frozen blueberries, 1/8 cup of brown rice ground in the food processor, 1/8 cup of ground oatmeal, and 1/8 to 1/4 ground and whole flax seed. This is good in recipes like sloppy joes or chili where the meat is blended with a lot of other stuff anyway. Try a pound of ground beef mixed with a pound of ground turkey - you won't notice a taste difference and unless you use really lean ground beef there will be less fat in the ground turkey (plus it's cheaper if you buy it frozen).Tips to make it fasterUse your crockpot to brown ground meat. It doesn't really brown anything, but it will cook it, and in most recipes you won't taste a difference. I will throw ground beef in the crockpot on high and go exercise or take a nap - whatever. Two pounds will be done in about two hours, depending on your crock-pot. When I double my chili recipe I throw several pounds in the crock for most of the day on low.Try your crockpot for everything! If you buy any sort of smoked meat, warm it in the crock with cabbage and onions for an hour - instant dinner! Make soup in it, cook a whole chicken in it ... it is a huge timesaver. Buy frozen vegetables. Frozen vegetables do not need to be chopped or peeled. Plus, if you always have some in your freezer you never need to run to the store because "there are no vegetables in the house." Tips to make it EasierOn a day when your main dish will take a bit of work, plan an easy vegetable and/or starch(bread, canned anything, salad). If your main dish will be easy, then maybe you have time for harder-to-prepare side dishes. On days when I have the time earlier in the day I like to precook my rice or pasta or sauce and then do the dishes. Cooking time usually includes cleanup time and if your starch is already made and those dishes already cleaned, well dinner time will just go so much smoother.
