Everything You Need To Organize, Shop And Cook Smart!Step 2: Set up Your ListWhen you are done with this second step, you should have a list that looks something like this:![]() You should annotate your list any way that works best for you - but here's why mine looks the way it does. Numbers 1 through 45 - to the left of the meal names I number the meals so I only have to write a number on the calendar, not the entire name of each meal. The list is physically located on the wall next to the family calenday so I can easily correspond number to meal. After each shopping trip I look at the days ahead and write numbers on the days until the next shopping trip is due. I normally put the numbers down in order, but I do switch things up. For example, if I know my husband will not be home to entertain my son while I am cooking on a certain night, I will schedule an easy meal (the highlighted ones) so there is almost no cooking to be done. If I can only fit in my exercise during the evening on one day I may schedule a no-prep meal like boca burgers so I can exercise while it is in the oven. Numbers 1 through 24 - to the far right of the meal names The recipe for each meal I cook is on a large index card in a plastic container. They are all numbered, and these are the numbers of each card. m3, m2, etc Makes 3 nights worth of food. These are the meals I double or triple up on and freeze the excess. M2 tells me I will have 2 nights worth of meals. Highlighted meals These are my easy dinners that can be on the table in a few minutes.
Shop ![]() If you have a central calendar that the whole family has access to, all you need to do is put your dinners list next to it and after you go shopping copy down the numbers of the next two weeks of meals in the days they will be cooked on. I start out just listing the meals in order but if I come to a day that looks like it will be very busy I look for an easy or quick dinner and put it on that day, even if it puts the meals out of sequence. Important You'll need to look at the scheduled dinner at least a day ahead of time so you can defrost meals the day before or start the crockpot cooking in the morning.
