Vegetable Gardening With Containers
Container gardening gives you a great deal of freedom to indulge your creative instincts in grouping colors, shape and texture of leaves and flowers of plants. It is also easy to replace a plant when it has finished blooming. When you arrange your plants in containers you must make sure that you place tall plants at the back of your cluster. Tall plants with strap-shaped leaves provide an excellent backdrop for short plants with large leaves. If you choose plants which bloom over a long period of time you will not need to replace them frequently. If, on the other hand, you want to use plants which bloom only for a short period, you must make sure that you have replacements for them on hand. Container gardening also gives you the freedom to choose containers that add to the effect of the plants that are in them. You can choose from a wide range of garden containers depending on your taste and budget.
Old fashioned porcelain bowls, copper urns, containers made of wood or tiles, as well as terracotta containers are available in the market. Terracotta containers will need to have their interiors painted with a sealer because water tends to seep out of them and your plant will be in danger of drying out. These special sealers are available in hardware stores. If you are working with a limited budget, you could choose inexpensive plastic containers and them unique by painting attractive designs on them. Whether you use expensive or cheap containers set them on saucers that match them. This will protect your carpet from getting damaged by the water seeping from the containers. Before you buy your plants, you must plan on where you will place your containers. This is important because the location of the pot must suit the plant that you put in it. You must also use potting mix of good quality. These considerations will make sure that your plant will flourish in its container.
You must not make the mistake of placing plants that need a lot of sunlight in a shady place and expect it to do well. You should not put plants with large roots in a container. Such plants require a large garden space if they are to thrive. An excellent way to decorate your front doorway is to place a group of potted plants to one side of the door. Of course, such an arrangement will require space around the front door.
