Help! My Child Won’t Eat His Lunch!

Children can be picky eaters at the best of times, and their likes and dislikes seem to change weekly, so preparing daily lunch boxes can be quite a task at times.

We may plan a menu, only to have them tell you in the middle of the week that they don’t like that anymore.  When these lunch box struggles begin, a good book to look to is Ellyn Satter’s Secrets of Feeding a Healthy Family, which gives advice on how to contend with your children’s lunch box animosities.

If we have children who generally don’t eat much to begin with, or would rather play instead of eating during recess at school, then we tend to be even more concerned about what goes on during those lunch break sessions.

It will stand to reason that children will learn better in the afternoon session at school, and will be more agreeable when they get home, if they have lunch at school. So how do we remedy this problem?

Firstly, provide something nutritive, but something they love. I normally use my banana bread recipe, using different variations, from adding cinnamon and raisins sometimes or chopped apples and nuts.  Kids tend to love these and will usually not make a fuss, regardless of what else is provided.

Secondly, have a lunch box routine, where kids know what they’ll be getting for lunch on a given day, tied in with favourite leftovers from dinner.

Although the meals change based on the season, children will usually eat what you give them on earlier on in the week, once they know they will get their favourites later in the week.

Thirdly, I ensure that I give my kids a quick snack as soon as they get in the car, to help them get through the evening till they get their dinner.  Simple choices like a fruit such as an apple or banana can help overcome any lingering lunchtime hunger issues.

But remember, if in doubt, find yourself a copy of Ellyn Satter’s book, because I believe it is one of the best parenting books available for all sorts of food issues with kids.

The Proper Way to Roast a Marshmallow for Smores

Burnt to a crisp or golden brown. Quick yet efficient or slowly toasted. That really is the great debate around many a campfire on a summer evenings. Many people prefer to just stick their marshmallow into the flames, let it catch on fire and then blow it out after it is sufficiently blackened. There is definitely some merit to the fact that you are done and licking melted marshmallows off your fingers in no time. Besides, the slightly charred taste adds a nice contrast to the over-the-top sweetness of a standard smore.

The other camp, which includes many more people, prefer (rather adamantly) to wait it out next to the hot flames, dodge the shifting smoke that stings their eyes and slowly (as in forever) toast their marshmallow to a perfect shade of golden brown known only to their watchful eyes. They prefer this golden brown color and claim that it lends itself to creating a better and better-tasting smore.

Now, with the advent of newer versions of marshmallows, you can add another flavor twist to the argument. Manufacturers now offer chocolate and toasted coconut marshmallows to jazz up your summer nights with. Chocolate marshmallows have a super sweet taste that can add an exciting change to any smore, especially for chocolate lovers. And, while toasted coconut is not everyone’s favorite, it really can take the flavor to another level for this simple bonfire treat. It is definately a big change from the normal flavor.

Whether you prefer burnt or lightly toasted marshmallows, flavored or plain marshmallows, everyone will agree that smores are a campfire treat that generations have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. The argument may wage on for decades. Those of us who love dessert will keep on licking sticky marshmallow goo off our fingers while others are still hunched over near the fire.

Invitation Wordings for Backyardigans Birthday Invitations

Backyardigans are a really fun TV cartoon show that kids really enjoy watching. The characters involved in the show have indeed become some of the most loved ones for children in the age group of 2 to 5 years. It makes sense to extend this fun to your child’s birthday party. Let us see how you can word your Backyardigans birthday invitations in a way that kids will love.

One excellent way to entice kids to attend the party is to make it seem as if the characters themselves are inviting them to the party. Invite the kids from the characters’ point of you. For instance, you can make Pablo invite them to the birthday party. For instance, ‘Hi guys, I’m Pablo the backyardigan inviting you to join (the child’s name) for his birthday party.

Words coming from their favorite characters will get them totally excited about the kids birthday party invitations of your child. Create a sense of fun that the kids are going to have in the party with words like. “Come to our backyard and enjoy the fun and adventure party.’ The children will be expectantly look forward to having a gala time (in the backyard, of course).

Also create a sense of adventure, also word the date and time of the party and create a particular theme, maybe from a particular episode. Create words like ‘the fun and adventure is coming on (your party time and date) for the (the age of the kid) th birthday of (name of your child).

You want to create the same atmosphere in the Backyardigans birthday invitations that they enjoy in the actual show. To back up the invitation, create a backyard scene in your own backyard or at the birthday venue and bring in all the characters. If possible, have some of the characters deliver the invitations themselves to the kids.

How to Decorate and Organize Your Kids Room

Kids come with lots of baggage. If there’s a kid living in your house, chances are their stuff is stored in every nook and cranny throughout your home. Decorating an organized kid’s room is essential to their safety and your sanity. There are many ways to do this: throw out excess clothing and store remaining clothing properly, take advantage of under bed storage, and use high shelving for displaying important mementos and collections.

Get the closet under control. Many times our kids end up with way too much clothing. The answer usually lies with ridding your child’s closet of things that do not fit, are old and wore out, or just articles of clothing your kid doesn’t wear. After downsizing to an appropriate amount of clothing, it’s time to find a practical way to store and organize the clothing. The easiest way to organize clothes is by having a chest of drawers and a closet that can handle all the clothing. Additional clear plastic storage bins can be purchased if you need more space.

Under bed storage can be used for seasonal items or small toys. Simply label the container according to what is it. That way you will always know what is in the storage bin without having to dig through it. A captain bed is especially useful for this purpose. The frame itself has shallow box drawers that are ideal for extra bed linens, clothes, or even toys that need to be stored out of sight.

Installing shelves 12 to 18 inches from the ceiling are perfect for displaying collections of Barbies or army men. These items are for display only and your child should be told not to climb for these items. This is also a great place to display framed photos, a birth certificate, or anything else decorative that can be seen, but not played with.

Keeping up with your child’s things can save you from being frustrated and provide a safe environment for your little one to play in. Storing away clothing, toys, and mementos properly can be a daunting task, but it can be done. Now let’s talk about decorative kitchen sink taps for your kitchen and a stylish rustic coffee table for your living room decor.

Storage Organization with Children

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that children are some of the messiest people you’ll ever meet. Even getting them to hang up their coats when they come in from inside can be a chore. Luckily, I’ve learned that by keeping their coat hangers and game bins easy to use, I can get them to, well, use them without having to yell at them. Here’s what I mean.

My kids would come in from outside, and then throw their coats on the floor and forget about them immediately. It was frustrating, and I got a little worked up trying to convince them to keep things organized, until one day when I got a hook installed on the wall right by the back door. Now, whenever they came in, it was staring them in the face, and they quickly figured out that it was easier to hang up their coat than to deal with me angry at them. I had been thinking about installing some mudroom lockers right by the door to use, but I didn’t really want to go that far, and thankfully the hanger was enough to get them to use it.

Their video games were an equally messy problem. With all the wires and machines, I don’t know how anyone is able to keep their video game storage neat. I ended up getting a large shelf unit on the wall, and told them to keep any games and controllers in there when they weren’t using them. It didn’t clean up things 100%, but the room is definitely less cluttered than it used to be, and really, I think that’s more than enough to ask for in this circumstance.

So when it comes to keeping your kids organized, try to find ways to make it easier to stay neat, and you’ll find yourself fighting with your kids much less. I know I did.

How to decroate a child’s room with window treatments and storage cubes

Decorating your children’s room can be lots of fun. With the wide range of children’s furniture available for you to choose from, there is no lack of choices and designs. In fact, there might be too much variety as some parents suffer from confusion about how to go about starting the decoration for their child’s room. Fortunately, it is not as hard as they think once they understand certain concepts about home decor. If you are in the same position, you will find the following tips to be relevant in helping you start on your home decor project.

One of the first thing you need to remember is that a kid’s room has to be more vibrant than an adult’s room. This is because they are drawn to colors and a dull looking room will bored them. Hence, make sure that you select a energetic color for the rooms. In addition, all the furniture should not be purchased from the view of an adult. For example, cellular shades might look stylish in an adult’s bedroom but will look totally out place in a child’s room. Instead, you should be getting colorful curtain designs such as those that contain cartoon characters or loud patterns.

Another thing you need to take note is the storage space. Kids need to have enough storage in their room to store all their book and toys. Without a proper storage system, it is tough to keep things organized. Currently, most of the storage solutions are not designed with kids in mind. The only exception are stackable storage cubes for kids.  These are colorful cubes that have the ability to be stacked on top or beside one another so as to create different shapes and sizes to fit the space constraint of the room. These cubes are not only easy to set up but they can provide plenty of storage space for your kid’s items.

Introducing Canopy Bed Curtains for Kids

Canopy bed curtains are usually best suited for setting romantic moods for couples.  But oftentimes children can be very inquisitive and wont to explore, and couples with kids may want to consider setting up a canopy bed complete with canopy bed curtains for kids.  However, there are several things to consider before satisfying your kids’ inquisition with a canopy bed for themselves.

Safety, first and foremost, would be a major consideration.  The canopy bed, curtains included, needs to be free of any sharp edges that may injure children, especially those who play a bit on the rough side.  In fact, choosing a bed with blunt surfaces is the most advisable way to go.  Kids will always be kids, so ensure that their safety is the very first thing to consider when buying their canopy bed.

Second tip would be to choose cotton as the fabric for your child’s canopy bed curtains.  Not only is it durable and washable, cotton is also a soft fabric that is  easy to the touch for children and adults alike.  Other fabric options include lace and acrylic, but lace would be a fabric more suited for adults and teenagers, while acrylic, despite providing warmth and durability, may be too rough a fabric for the children in the house.

Other factors, like choosing the right design and size for your kid’s canopy bed are best left to you, the customer, being the most knowledgeable on what your kid wants and what would keep him or her happy.  It also helps to talk to your children first before making the purchase – make sure that they understand that beds are primarily for sleeping and not for playing.  But with the first two tips in mind, and with your child’s safety as your first priority, choosing the right canopy bed curtains for kids and the bed itself would be a cinch.

What should I buy – a bucket or a tub?

As someone who runs a Home & Family site — or in other words what one would call a family advice site, I get asked about what would make for an ideal purchase all the time. Parents want to know what would be the better option to go for — a specialized plastic tub for bathing their baby or a shallow tub for the same purpose. I prefer to answer this one with a question – How many kids do you have?

While it may seem like a weird answer at first, it is imperative that you understand my motives behind it. If you’ve got more than a single child or are planning for more to be on their way then it makes sense to buy the specialized baby plastic tub. Otherwise, why would you want to waste money on something that you will use only for a couple of months and then have to throw out? That too in this economy. What you need is a shallow bucket, preferably half a foot in height and if possible in an oval shape. This allows you to bathe your baby in the most effective manner possible. All you need to do is place a small towel behind their head to ensure that it stays above the water at all times. After that you make sure that you have one hand placed right below the nape of your baby’s neck at all times — a small, but important precaution just in case.

A plastic tub is a great way to ensure that the money you spend now can be used later on as well. One of the best uses of this small bucket that I’ve personally found (the things being a mother of three will teach you)! is as a plastic laundry basket. I use it to segregate and separate my whites from my coloreds.

Sing A Ma Jigs

There are a number of brilliant new toy releases this year already and one of the hottest new toys so far are the sing a ma jigs. These toys for toddlers and young ones are going to be a really big hit no doubt about it.

Let us take a quick look at just what they are and what exactly they do to make them so special.

Well, they come in a number of colors and they are each an individual personality which is gong to make them very special for the children. On top of that they are able to open and close their mouth as they form words. But they also sing their own songs as well as talking in their own unique way.

Their high pitches singing may be a bone of contention with parents as it may just drive them a little potty but it seems like the kids absolutely love them.

But the really special thing about the sing a ma jigs is what happens when we group them together. They then sing songs in perfect harmony with each other which is going to be a real talking point this year. This clever idea by the makers, Fisher Price, is sure to mean that most parents are going to end up buying a few of these toys, but luckily the price is very low for them so this is not too much of a problem.

If you have been looking for something that is just that little but different but still very affordable then the sing a ma jigs certainly fit the bill. You can be sure that most children are going to own one at the end of the year so it may well be worth buying one as soon as possible just in case the prices rise dramatically which can often be the case during the Christmas period.
