Becoming a Vegetarian
How many times have you tried to eat healthy? Promised yourself that you were going to eat healthier the next year? In the past few years, there has been resurgence in the number of people who have become vegetarians. There are all sorts of reasons that people opt to go vegetarian. For some people, the reason may have to do with animal cruelty; for others, it may be a religious thing; for some, it may be the fact that they don’t like the way meat tastes; and for some, it may simply have to do with the fact that being a vegetarian may be a healthier way of living and eating. The most common misconception with vegetarianism is the notion that people who are vegetarians don’t have nearly as many health problems and that they are all thin and in great shape. NOT true. Just because you don’t eat meat doesn’t mean that you can’t still find other ways of eating poorly. For instance, there are no animal products in a lot of junk food such as potato chips, pop tarts, cakes and other desserts.
On the flip side of things, vegetarianism is, for the most part, a great way to eat and live healthier. People who are good vegetarians usually end up cutting a ton of fat out of their diets when they eat because meat contains a lot of saturated fat. Instead, they end up replacing the bad fat with things that are lower in fat and actually contain more of the “good fats”. This means that vegetarians who practice eating the right way are actually at lower risk for heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer and other diseases. Other benefits of being a vegetarian include the fact that there are less instances of food poisoning because as we all know, meat requires preservatives and special ways of storing it as well as cooking it to prevent harmful bacteria from making us ill. People who are vegetarians also tend to help the environment more because there is research that shows that the meat industry harms the environment more in how it raises more food to feed the animals before they are slaughtered.
Because vegetarians don’t eat meat, they have to replace the nutrition that they would’ve gotten with other, typically more healthy, food choices. If you’re thinking about becoming a vegetarian, there are some things you should consider: First of all, make sure that you research it thoroughly. Borrow a couple of books from the library; talk to a couple of friends who are already vegetarians to get their take on it. Make sure that you are becoming a vegetarian for the right reasons. Being a vegetarian isn’t a hobby; it’s an entire lifestyle change. Are you ready for that? Look up different restaurants that are vegetarian friendly. Also, have fun looking up some neat vegetarian recipes so that you’ll know what types of foods to eat. Don’t just rush into becoming a vegetarian. You’ll have an easier time if you gradually wean yourself off of meat. Start by making one or two vegetarian meals a week. Gradually move to increase the number of vegetarian meals until you have finally stopped eating red meat altogether.
