Mom
For me, for everyday use I use an SPF 15 moisturizing lotion on my face and neck like Oil of Olay Complete UV Protective Moisture Lotion, and maybe I will use Lubriderm SPF 15 on my arms and legs. If we are going to the beach or out in the sun I prefer coppertone oil free sunblock spf 30 for my face and I will use just about any lotion on my body, but I like banana boat sport lotion and coppertone spectra.
I do not like banana boat sport spray, it goes on too runny and if you sweat it runs into your eyes and burns.
Dad
My husband likes to use sunscreen gel because it goes on easily and dries quickly and doesn't leave that sunblock smell-residue on your hands. I like it for those reasons too, but I find it does not protect as well or for as long as lotion so I don't use it. He likes coppertone sport sunblock gel and bullfrog quick gel.
Kids
We first put sunblock on Joe when he was 4 months old. All the bottles say not to use on infants under 6 months old, but we took our chances. We first used waterbabies spf 45. I spot tested a small area on his leg and when he had no reaction by 24 hours later we used it all over him. We also used waterbabies spectra3 on him when he was just a baby - probably between 6 months and 16 months - with no problems. Now that he is 2, we use anything on him, but I prefer ocean potion kids spray. It sprays on finely, rubs in easily, doesn't stink, and works well.
On Joe, I also like to use the stick sunblock on his face (if you rub it on your hands and then rub it on their faces there is less chance of getting it in the kid's eyes because it doesn't run) and the hair and scalp spray on his head because he can't be counted on to keep his hat on. We like
banana boat kids stick sunblock and faces stick sunblock and banana boat hair and scalp sunblock.
General sunscreen information
With sunscreen, it's always best to apply 20 minutes or so before you get out in the sun. I also recommend getting waterproof-sweatproof products, and reapplying if you are out for more than two hours or towel off. This has worked well for our family. We have lived in Hawaii for 11 years and none of us has ever had a serious burn. Myself and my boy have never even had a minor burn, but my husband is not quite as careful as we are.
Some people look for spf 80 and spf 100, but I don't think they exist. I generally use spf 30 for my whole family, but sometimes we put 45 on the boy because his skin is really fair. If you feel you need extra protection, I would try baby magic spf 50. That stuff goes on very thick, and is extremely protective. It will take you a while to get it on, and it is impossible to rub in all the way, but we have friends who have found it very effective on sun-sensitive skin.
